DEMOCRATS IN CONVENTION

Cheers Given For Mr Roosevelt TALK OF THIRD TERM (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) CHICAGO, July 15. President Roosevelt’s third term band-wagon got off to a rolling start within 10 minutes of ■ the opening of the Democratic Convention. The Mayor of Chicago, Mr E. J. Kelly, mentioned Mr Roosevelt’s name, touching off the first floor demonstration. Senator John H. Bankhead, of Alabama, who made the keynote speech, said: “We have assembled at the most fateful moment in the history of mankind. The sinister shadow of cruel and savage despotism hangs like the pail of doom over the peoples who love democracy and liberty. Eight small and defenceless nations and now France lie in agony in the ashes of totalitarian destruction. Britain now stands alone against the hurricane of the Blitzkreig. Hitler and Mussolini have sworn her total annihilation, also eternal enmity to all the so-called decadent democracies, which includes us. Ido not know what attitude the convention may take on the subject, but I know it is the attitude of the American people that we will resist to the death any compromise of our democratic principles with those malignant disturbers of world peace—that we will not propose to appease those aggressors.” TANKS ORDERED BY U.S. ARMY (Received July 16, 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 15. The army has issued contracts for 627 12-ton tanks equipped with 30/50 calibre machine-guns and one 37 m.m. cannon to cost 11,000,000 dollars. Three thousand tanks, the largest of 18 tons, have been ordered and it is planned to purchase 3000 more, including several of between 60 and 70 tons.
