Mr L. G. Wood, general manager of Scoullar and Chisholm Ltd., and Mr Cyril Kerr, formerly of Invercargill and now of the Dunedin sales staff, are paying a brief visit to Invercargill. Judge G. P. Shepherd, of the Native Land Court, Wellington, is at present visiting Invercargill He is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Mr W. F. Swift, district manager of the Government Tourist Bureau at Invercargill, will return this afternoon from Te Anau, where he has been relieving Mr W. A. Pickford, manager of the Te Anau Hotel, who has been on leave.

Aircraftsman R. I. Morrison is spending his leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs R. G. Morrison, Park street. Mr William Grounds, who has been appointed to the Legislative Council, is one of the leading figures in the dairy industry in New Zealand. He was elected to the Dairy Control Board in 1923, and for a number of years occupied the position of chairman. Later, he became associated with the control of a number of factories in the North Island, and devoted himself to the expansion of the Dominion’s export trade in butter and cheese. At different times he has been a member of most of the local bodies in the Hokianga district. He unsuccessfully contested the Kaipara seat in the interest of the United Party against Mr Coates in 1935. Advice has been received by Mr E. O. Mason, of the Social Security Department, Rotorua, that his son, SubLieutenant Jack Mason, , has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in recognition of his work in the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. On the outbreak of war, Sub-Lieutenant Mason trained for a comjnission in the Navy, later being given command of H.M.S. Chico during the evacuation of Dunkirk. His vessel was the means of removing more than 1000 men from the shelltom beach.

Mr W. J. Rogers, whose appointment to the Legislative Council has been announced, has occupied the position of Mayor of Wanganui for several terms since 1927 when he was first elected to that office. He was secretary of the Wanganui Waterside Workers' Union for some years, and has held office on both the Harbour Board and the Hospital Board. He has contested the Wanganui seat several times without success.
