WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MATCHES AT QUEEN’S

PARK

COLLEGIATE SUPERIOR TO INVERCARGILL

The Southland Women’s Hockey Association’s competition was continued at Queen’s Park on Saturday in cola and unpleasant conditions. Ex-High was far superior to Technical and Collegiate beat the Invercargill team in a hard game. The ground was in a very bad condition, parts of it being so slippery that some players found it difficult to maintain their balance; as a result a good standard of hockey was impossible. EX-HIGH BEATS TECHNICAL The match between Technical and Ex-High was a poor display, the state of the ground making things difficult for the younger Technical players. Technical was without the services of H. Newlands, whose consistent defensive play was much missed. However, at some stages Technical had its opponents thinking and some of the fine penetrations by R. Watson and O. Hemmings were exceptionally clever. M. Anderson, in goal, made some good saves and B. Greer and J. MacGregor contributed their share to the good defence. In the first half. O. Hemmings netted an excellent goal and during the second half J. Sycamore scored another goal. For Ex-High L. Purvis, H. Hansen and L. Fraser played well, but there was little good combination. At half-time Ex-High was leading Technical by five goals to one, and when the final whistle sounded, the scores were: Ex-High 9, Technical 2. The teams were:— Technical.—M. Anderson, B. Greer, J. MacGregor, O. Kimble, L. McDermott, I. Hinton, J. Sycamore, R. Brosnan, O. Hemmings, N. Peacock, R. Watson. Ex-High.—A. Anderson, F. Monk, L. Fraser, H. Hansen, E. Fox, M. Woods, H. Monk, L. Purvis, S. Monk, M. Scott. Messrs H. Kelly and H. E. Perrin were the umpires. COLLEGIATE v. INVERCARGILL The second game, that between Invercargill and Collegiate, proved a hard struggle for both sides, Collegiate eventually turning the tables on Invercargill by a small margin. Collegiate attacked and in the first few minutes penetrated the defence, D. Gray scoring. For a few moments play remained fairly even, but flollegiate was soon on the attack and harassed the opposition continually; Invercargill retaliated and carried the ball practically to Collegiate’s goal when the latter began an onslaught. Play fluctuated up and down the field with Invercargill having repeated shots at the Collegiate goal, but all efforts were useless. D. Gray then made a good run, but her shot at goal missed narrowly. A. Shaw, who combined effectively with N. Wylie and D. Gray, made a dazzling penetration and passed the ball to N. Wylie, who goaled. M. Kelly (Invercargill) played an excellent game and B. Swale (Invercargill) and P. Millard (Collegiate) also played well. At half time Collegiate was leading by two goals to nil and the final score was: Collegiate 4, Invercargill 0. The scorers for Collegiate were: D. Gray (1), N. Wylie (1) and A. Shaw (2). The teams were: Collegiate.—A. Bateman, I. Hunter, E. Blackie, M. McLeod, P. Millard, O. Butler, D. Gray, A. Shaw, N. Wylie. Invercargill.—M. Kelly, F. Foulston, H. Sandri, B. Swale, M. Elliotte, P. Hall, E. Edwards, G. Tomlins, M. Howie, F. Watt, P. Hemmings. The umpires were Messrs L. Holmes and F. Hinton.
