JUNIOR MATCH WON BY WESTERN

GAME FOR MUDGE SHIELD In a keenly-fought junior' Rugby football match for the Mudge Shield on Centennial Park, Winton, on Saturday, Western defeated Central by 11 points to six. The game provided plenty of incident and at times play veered from one goal-line to the other in rapid succession. Territorially the game was fairly even and play was confined very largely to the forwards, although some bright passing movements were witnessed, with Western having the better penetration. Dowling was especially prominent in the Western team, and was responsible for two tries and a penalty goal.

The teams were:— WESTERN: E. Hunt, A. Erskine, D. McPherson, D. Wright, Vi Dowling, P. Lowe, W. Carr, S. McKenzie, J. Booth, L. Bokser, P. Whyte, P. Corkery, Minty, C. Mason, J. Horrell. CENTRAL: Cockroft, Robinson, Wilson, Irwin, Jackson, Cotham, Young, Johnston, Turner, Donald, Grimwood, McCallum, Bartlett, McCallum, Hammond.

Western began the attack and Central was penalized near its goal-line. V. Dowling goaled from a handy angle. The ball was coming back to Western from the scrums, and from a ruck near the Central line, Western hooked and the half-back transferred to V. Dowling, who scored cleverly. McPherson converted. Central took a turn on the offensive and a force-down relieved Western. A penalty kick awarded to Central near the Western goal saw Johnstone open Central’s account. Western 8, Central 3.

Western took play into Central territory, and Dowling scored, the kick missing. Again play veered quickly and from a melee Bartlett crossed for Central. The kick at goal failed. Central held a slight territorial advantage for the remainder of the game, but no further points were added. The final score was: Western 11, Central 6. Mr E. Fleming was referee.
