INCREASES IN REVENUE

CUSTOMS RETURNS AT INVERCARGILL

TOTAL FOR SIX MONTHS Increases in the Customs revenue at Invercargill for the month of June, for the second quarter and the first six months of 1940 over the 1939 figures are shown in the latest returns. The increases are due chiefly to higher revenue from Customs duty, which was nearly £4OOO greater last month, more than £13,000 greater for the quarter and more than £ll,OOO greater for the half year compared with the corresponding periods last year. The figures are: —

HIGHEST REVENUE AT DUNEDIN CUSTOMS AND BEER DUTY RISE (United Press Association) DUNEDIN June 30. Probably the highest Customs revenue recorded at the port of Otago for any quarter was received during the three months ended Saturday. The total for the quarter just ended was £502,178 which was far in excess of the sum of £398,280 recorded in the corresponding period of last year. While the changed conditions of the war and increased taxation make comparisons of little value it is noticeable that Customs duty increased by £39,178, beer by approximately £30,000, sales tax by more than £BOOO.

As is to be expected with petrol restrictions in operation, petrol tax declined by more than £14,000 and tyre tax by £6OO Gold tax was also down by more than £7OO. Tlie figures for the month of June showed similar increases in Customs duty, beer duty and sales tax. Petrol tax declined by about one-third. Tyre tax, strangely enough, showed 100 per cent, increase. The total revenue for the month showed an increase of nearly £22,000. Following are the detailed figin’es:—
