DRAIN FLOODING NUISANCE

IMPROVEMENTS AT COLLINGWOOD

WORK DONE BY SOUTHLAND COUNTY COUNCIL

Work calculated to lessen the flooding nuisance in the Collingwood district has been carried out by the Southland County Council./ Reporting to the council at its meeting yesterday the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) said that the work of cleaning the pipe drain on the west side of the North road from the Waihopai river to Galway street had been completed. The cost of labour was £7O. “It is interesting to note the effect of the grade changes in the pipe line,” said the engineer. “The accumulation of silt was considerable, in certain places to the extent of half filling 15-inch pipes. The work carried out will lessen the tendency for flooding in this area because of the increased carrying capacity of the pipe, but the effect will last only a year or two until the accumulation ■ of silt again partially blocks the pipes.” Members expressed satisfaction with the work which had been done. GARSTON BRIDGE A petition signed by 30 ratepayers in the Garston, Fairlight, Athol and Kingston districts asking the Southland and Lake County Councils to approach the Railways Department about having the railway bridge at Garston altered to permit the passage of stock and vehicles was received. “About 300 head of fat lambs and sheep, 6500 head of surplus sheep and 3000 sacks of grain would be brought over the bridge each year,” stated the petition. “At the present time the bridge accommodation is totally inadequate and our losses through damage to stock using the existing footbridge are very heavy.” The council decided to refer the petition to the Lake County Council to get its views on the suggestion.

! TENDER ACCEPTED

The following tender was accepted:— Houston road.—Gorge road fencing, J. F. Hamill, £4ll/9/-. A request by Mr E. W. Connell, Otara, for attention to the bridge on Tappers road, across Duck Creek, was referred to the member for the riding and the engineer. “Send out a bulldozer or any other dozer to fill up the great hole that has been blown right across the front of it,” stated a letter from Mr Connell. “It is impossible to take stock across and the water in the creek is very cold for the cows in winter.”

The following recommendations of the engineer (Mr G. R. Milward) were adopted:—Two new lights to be installed in Frank street (West Gore) as soon as possible, one at the junction of Elizabeth and Frank streets and one on the southern portion of Frank street and opposite the north boundary of Shanks’s property; work on the provision of facilities to enable the Five Rivers school bus to draw up in front of the school on its correct side to be carried out.

A complaint by ratepayers of Dipton about the condition of the footpath from the Dipton hotel to the Dipton Hall was referred to the engineer with power to act. “Because of the overhanging broom, the inches of mud and the pools of water, the footpath is unfit for use,” stated a letter.
