LEAVE TO GET MARRIED

Woman Teacher’s

Application

EDUCATION BOARD’S

VIEW

The leave to which a woman teacher was entitled to get married was a subject that was considered at some length by the Southland Education Board at its monthly meeting yesterday. The teacher had applied for three months’ leave. The chairman (Mr S. Rice) said one month should be sufficient. However, a woman had to carry out preparations for her marriage, such as sewing. Mr L. S. Alsweiler; That is all done 12 months beforehand. He did not think, said Mr Alsweiler, that more than two weeks’ leave should be granted and this could be fitted in with the school holidays to give a holiday of one month. He expected to see similar applications come before the board in the future as there would probably be more marriages of women teachers of the war. A precedent set and acted upon in all future applications. Mr W. Bell proposed that leave as from July 20 should be granted. This would give the teacher three weeks leave in addition to her holidays. An amendrtient was then proposed that two weeks’ leave should be granted. If three weeks’ leave was ’ranted, it would nave to be granted in every future case, said Mr Alsweiler. The chairman said every case would have to be considered on its merits. The amendment was then withdrawn, the mover ..nd seconder agreeing to the granting of three weeks’ leave and the motion was passed.
