HARRIER TITLES NEXT MONTH

Little Time Left For Training

By

WHISTLE

There are only a few weeks left for preparation for the cross-country championships which take place next month and those harriers who intend competing should be in strict training. The schedule to be followed has already been outlined, but the cardinal points will bear repetition. The great thing is to be moderate in life and habits. Anybody in strict training should strive for regularity; regular meals; regular sleep and plenty of it; regular training and exercise. This is half the battle for any athlete and preparation begins to give results directly it is achieved. As mentioned in earlier articles, all training should now be concentrated on the development of speed and stamina. Jogging should be confined to warmingup and all other work done at from three-quarters to seven-eighths effort. Training should consist of a judicious mixture of road and cross-country work.

Diet and physical exercise are important at this stage of training. Fatty food should be carefully rationed and all athletes are wise to avoid those foods which habitually disagree with their systems. By eating healthily of good, plain meals the average athlete cannot go far wrong. The main thing to remember is to avoid heavy meals and liquids on the day of a race. The Invercargill Club ran its annual steeplechase at the racecourse last Saturday > and as was anticipated, the junior runners were on top. Of the first six placings, five were juniors and J. Metcalfe was the only senior runner to get a place. G. McKenzie was the actual winner and his success was well deserved. He has. been a regular attender and is a keen harrier. The St. Paul’s Club reports that some of its better-known members are now getting fit. Such men as N. J. Dorman, A. Hind and L. Armstrong have been prominent in the weekly runs.

Just how many teams will compete in the Southland cross-country championships is not yet known, but it is hoped there will be visiting teams to add interest to the event.
