CAGE BIRDS ON DISPLAY

Quality Of British Finches

INVERCARGILL CLUB’S SHOW

Cage birds of outstanding quality were exhibited at the third annual show of the Invercargill Canary and Cage Bird Specialists Club which was opened yesterday. All sections were well represented. Numerically the budgerigars were strongest, there being about 300 on display, but in quality the British finches were outstanding, the judge (Mr E. Tomkins, Oamaru) considering that they constituted the best collection he had seen at any show in the South Island, The best greenfinch was entered by Mrs S. Fraser, This was a big bird of splendid quality, steady in the perch, with close feathers and good conformation. There were some particularly fine specimens of the goldfinch breed, a bird entered by Mr J. R. Smith being outstanding. The Yorkshire canaries were an even lot and the judge had a difficult job to separate entries in some of the classes The best was a yellow variegated cock exhibited by L. and W Taylor, which was a nicely-sized bird, well drawn, with plenty of length and a good position. This bird was adjudged champion of the show. There were not so many Norwich canaries, but those that were shown were of excellent quality, the champion, W. Henderson’s entry being a splendid type. An entry of W. Feaver’s in the novice section also elicited praise from the judge. The budgerigars were even in quality and the judge’s job was not an easy one. The champion was a sky blue cock shown by H. J. Conway. It had a beautiful skull, a good body and fine breast and wings. Good carriage and substance and a nice balance were noticeable in most of the budgerigars. Mr T. H. Philpott, judge of the roller canary section said that the winning entries in the open and unflighted classes, were first-class birds. Although there was quite a large number of entries in this section, few of the exhibits were rather disappointing. These birds were judged on the tone of their song, and there were quite a few that failed to sing.

The judges were.—Canaries: Mr E. Tomkins (Oamaru); British and foreign birds, Mr W. Taylor (Invercargill); rollers, Mr T. H. Philpott (Invercargill). The show will be continued today. The list of awards is:
