OBITUARY

MR A. W. PANNETT Recently the death occurred suddenly of Mr A. W. Pannett, of “Baverstock,” Clinton, one of the most prominent farmers in the district. Mr Pannett’s grandparents were among the early settlers in Canterbury, and Mr Pannett, who was born in 1874, was the oldest boy of a family of 13. His school days were spent at Springston. All his life he was a loyal supporter of the church and he taught Sunday School for many years in Canterbury. Mr Pannett began farming on his own account at Opua in 1900, and in 1902 he married Miss Elizabeth Ellen Osborn. He moved to Pleasant Point, and finally in 1913 to Waiwera South, where he took up a large holding on the Clifton estate between the Waiwera and Pomahaka rivers. In 1927 he began the breeding of Southdown stud sheep with which he was most successor Pannett is survived by his widow, two sons—Mr H. W. Pannett, of Waiwera South, and Mr R. O. Pannett, of Wairuna —and two daughters, Misses E. and J. Pannett, of Waiwera South. MR THOMAS STONE (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 27. The death has occurred of Mr Thomas Stone, sub-editor for 45 years of The Lyttelton Times which in the last few years of its life became The Christchurch Times. Mr Stone began his journalistic career on The Telegraph, an evening paper published in Christchurch. He continued in newspaper work in Taranaki and Ashburton where he represented The Lyttelton Times. From this position he graduated in 1890 to the sub-editorial chair; holding this position in The Lyttelton Times till the paper ceased publication in 1935.
