ARMY NIGHT AT COMMUNITY SING

POPULAR SOLDIERS’ SONGS The Army Princess, Miss Helen Hargest, was introduced to the audience at the Invercargill community sing last night. It was Army night and the song leaders, Messrs Charles Trim and Bernard Hammonds, 'made the most of the many popular soldiers’ songs. The large crowd was in a happy mood and in addition to giving the Army Princess a rousing welcome it responded well to the sale of goods by auction. During the evening it was announced that Mr W J. A. McGregor, who purchased the child’s bedroom suite for £lO at the sing last week, had generously given the furniture to the Southland Hospital for the use of sick children.

An excellent programme of band music, singing, elocution and dancing was contributed last night. The assisting artists were Mrs Raymond Walker, Noeline Cole, Mrs A. Ritchie, Misses Edwina Hargest. Ethel Hargest and Joyce Hargest, Mr A. Sutherland’s pupils and the Battalion Band. The accompanist for the community singing was Mr J. N. Armstrong. The following donations were received at the sing:—J. H. Milne and Sons, £10; Mr and Mrs H. Day (Lady Barkly), £2; A. Cundall, £2; Mrs Cuthbertson, £2; Mrs M. P. P. Ryan, £2; J. S. Brass, £2; H. P. Campbell, £2; Gordon Webb, £2; L. Holmes, £2; Mr Dingle, £l. Mr Ballantyne, 10/-. Thornbury Girls Basketball Club, 10/-; F. Anderson, 10/-; Mr Lyon, 10/-. Articles sold at auction included two gallons of petrol £2; quarter ton of coal £2; cake, £2; pair of budgerigars, £l.
