Miss I. Hunt, of Nelson, has been appointed matron of the Truby KingHarris Hospital in Dunedin. She will succeed Miss Hilditch, who will retire shortly.

A meeting to form a sub-committee of the Red Cross Society in the AyenalNorthend. district, will be held in the Orphans’ Hall tomorrow at 2.30 p.m. Mrs T. F. Gilkison and Mrs F. G. HallJones will speak. Mrs S. H. Carter, Makarewa Junction, entertained a few friends at a cup-and-saucer afternoon on Tuesday in honour of Miss Millie Whyte, whose marriage to Mr D. Butt takes place today. Competitions were won by Miss Millie Whyte, Mrs A. Cruickshank, Mrs T. Nelson and Miss Mavis Whyte. Miss Edith Watson, C.V.0., C.8.E., cne of Mr Winston Churchill’s new private secretaries, is no newcomer to No. 10 Downing street. A discreet woman, with organizing ability and a gift for making friends, Miss Watson, who is a civil servant, qualifies for a salary of between £7OO and £940 a year.

A meeting was held at Waikiwi yesterday to form a sub-committee of the Red Cross Society. Mrs T. F. Gilkison and Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones addressed the meeting. The following committee was elected: Chairman, Mrs P. Thomson; secretary, Mrs S. C. Bingham; committee, Mesdames A. Fraser, C. Weir, R. Acton, T. McKenzie, H. R. Williams and R. Tinker. Mr and Mrs Mulcahy, Andrew street, entertained a number of friends at a social evening on Monday last. These friends gathered to celebrate the return to Invercargill of their host and hostess. The drawing room was decorated with flowers and violet drapings.

Miss E. Edgerton sang and community singing and cards preceded a travel talk by the hostess. For her very interesting talk, chiefly about Melbourne, Mrs Mulcahy was sincerely thanked by Mrs J. Hodges on behalf of the guests. Among those present were Mr and Mrs Clark, sen., Mr and Mrs Clark, jun., Mr and Mrs W. Williams, Mrs Townson, Mrs Hewitt, Mrs J. Hodges and Miss Emma Edgerton.
