BATTALION BAND

ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS

The band had been very active during the past year; the senior band appeared before the public on 54 occasions and the junior band appeared on 19 occasions, stated the annual report of the Battalion Band Association which was adopted at the annual meeting. The appreciation of the bandsmen and the public were due to the bandmaster for his efforts during the year. Apart from ordinary functions he had to prepare the band for the centennial contest at Wellington, work which entailed an enormous amount of work and time Captain Smart was to be thanked for his work, and it was regretted he had found it necessary to cease to play an active part in the affairs of the band, because of military duties. Mr F. Logan had carried on in his place and had put a tremendous amount of work into drilling the band. Although the band was unsuccessful in the centennial contest at Wellington, the experience gained would be most valuable in the future, continued the report. It was warmly applauded for its performance and favourable comment was made, not only by spectators, but by visiting bandsmen as well. The executive decided to appeal to the public for funds to send the band to Wellington, and in this way sufficient money was raised to finance the trip. During the year there had been many changes in the band, some members , having resigned, but it still retained its main strength. Before going overseas on active service, the band’s adjutant, Captain Cockerill, received presentations on behalf of both the senior and junior bands. The committee began the year with a credit balance of £256 and finished with a credit of £291. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr A. Cook; vice-presidents, Messrs Gillespie, D. Famey, F. Holloway, L. A. Blackmore, A. Wachner, R.

Donaldson, T. Boyd, F. Lange, T. Wray Wilson, J. Holland, W. Stewart and S. Russell; secretary, Mr T. McGill; treasurer, Mr W. Woodley; general committee, Messrs J. McClure, G. Heyrick, H. Lindsay, R. Donaldson, W. Sinclair and T. Page; band committee, Sergeant Larsen and Bandsmen F. Woodley, R. Cowley, R. McMaster and G. Greer.
