Mr J. F. Skedden, who has been appointed programme organizer for the National Broadcasting Service at Christchurch, left for the north yesterday. Mr C. E. Just, who for the last 14 years has been in charge of the shipping department of the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., Invercargill, and who is to leave this week on transfer to Dunedin, was the guest at a stall function last evening. Mr J. S. Marshall, manager of the Invercargill branch of the company, expressed regret that Mr Just was leaving and congratulated him on his promotion to succeed Mr Sydney Styche, who was well known in shipping circles throughout New Zealand and who was retiring. On behalf of the staff he presented Mr Just with a log box and firescreen. Several executive officers also spoke and Mr Just replied.

Mr J. Braithwaite left by the express yesterday afternoon for Dunedin. He was in charge of the first fifteen of the Southland Boys’ High School, which plays the annual match against the Otago Boys’ High School today.

Mr G. S. J. Read, locomotive engineer of the Railways Department, Dunedin, arrived in Invercargill by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr R. P. Taylor, of Invercargill, is acting as stationmaster at Winton until the arrival of Mr L. O’Sullivan, of Dunedin, who succeeds Mr L. Cahill. Mr Cahill has been transferred to Hokitika.

Mr A. McD. Meldrum left by Sunday night’s express for Trentham. Mr W. Stapleton, foreman of the reserves department of the Invercargill City Council, was appointed by the council last night to take charge of the department in association with the assistant engineer (Mr R. P. Fish) during the absence of the superintendent (Mr B. P. Mansfield) on active service. The Rev. W. R. Bartie announced at the annual meeting of the congregation of the Akaroa Presbyterian Church that he had received a call to Nightcaps and that he expected to be leaving in about a month’s time.

Private T. O. Lynch, who before enlisting was a member of the Wyndham Post Office staff and who is at present on leave, was met by the staff yesterday and presented with a fountain pen. The presentation was made by the postmaster, Mr E. A. Pankhurst, who wished Private Lynch the best of luck and a safe return. Other speakers were Messrs E. W. J. Shepperd and D. Hunter.

Sapper J. F. Lester arrived in Invercargill from Trentham yesterday on leave.

Mr M. R. Jones, of Hawera, a Maori interpreter and business man, has accented the position of private secretary to the Minister of Native Affairs, made vacant by the death of Mr H. R. Balneavis, and will take up duty at the Native Office on July 1. Mr Jones, who served with the Maori Contingent in the last European War, has been prominent in the Returned Soldiers’ Association.

Professor H. E. Field has been appointed Dean of the Faculty of Mental, Moral, and Social Sciences at Canterbury University College. Dr A. Crowther and Messrs R. Winterbourn and C. G. F. Simkin have been elected members of the faculty. Mr A. J. Danks, of the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, has been appointed to a position at the Christchurch West High School, made vacant by the departure of Mr J. J. McAuliffe to take an appointment as educational officer to the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Mr Ronald Syme, a former New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, has been appointed attache-in-charge for the Ministry of Information at the British Legation, Belgrade. Mr Syme lately made a tour of the Balkan countries on behalf of the Foreign Office. The award of the Butterworth Prize in Law to Mr C. S. Turnbull has been approved by the Canterbury University College Council.
