FINE RESPONSE BY PUBLIC SERVANTS

CALL FOR WAR SERVICE (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 25. An extremely fine response has been made by the Public Service, apart from such branches as the Railways and the Post and Telegraph Department, to the call for war service. Out of approximately 20,870 permanent and temporary officers employed under the control of the Public Service Commissioner, no fewer than 1716 have offered their services.

It has to be realized that a large proportion of the total number of employees are women and officers either over or under military age. Of the number mentioned, 846 are already serving with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 36 with the Royal Aii- Force, 146 with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and 116 on home service. Eight officers, of whom four are serving with the Royal Air Force, already have made the supreme sacrifice.
