MEETING OF WESTERN SUB-BRANCH The annual meeting of the Western District sub-branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held at Otautau.. There was only a moderate attendance. The annual report stated that the inaugural meeting was held in Otautau on June 1, 1939, when a large gathering of teachers representative of the Western District, unanimously decided to form a sub-branch of the Southland Educational Institute with headquarters at Otautau. At that meeting Mr W. H. D. Gazzard was elected the first president and also delegate to the Southland Committee of Management.

“In its first year the sub-branch has been fortunate in receiving so many visitors to its meetings. On one occasion Mr A. P. McDonald, Southland president, and Messrs Cushin and Pankhurst, members of the management committee, visited a meeting at Riverton to address members on institute affairs and on the various anomalies existing under the new salary scheme. On another occasion Messrs D. C. Pryor and H. Ashbridge, Dominion president and secretary respectively, honoured the sub-branch with a visit during the course of their tour of Southland. This meeting at Otautau was addressed by both visitors on the work of the New Zealand Educational Institute and on the educational systems in other countries. “All teachers are thanked for their continued interest and enthusiasm in sub-branch activities and to the incoming committee are extended best wishes for another successful year.”

'The election of officers was held over until next meeting.
