SUSPENSION OF PLAYERS

SATURDAY’S RUGBY GAMES

ARRANGEMENTS FOR GAME WITH ARMY TEAM

The cases of senior players who were ordered off the field during the progress of games on Saturday were considered by the management committee of the Southland Rugby Football Union last evening. A letter was received from Mr 1. Riddell, referee in the InvercargillPirates game, stating that he had ordered off S. E. Purdue (Invercargill) for “indiscriminate kicking.” The player was in attendance at the meeting. He said he did not think the Pirates player who went down on the ball was going to roll over as he. did. He though he could get a kick in at the ball before the player rolled over. “I was a bit unlucky that the kicking I did was seen,” added Purdue. He said that plenty of kicking went on during the game but it was not seen. It was decided to suspend Purdue for one playing Saturday, a motion that he be suspended for two playing Saturdays being defeated by six votes to five. „ . The chairman (Mr N. R. Brown) commented upon the inconsistency of the committee in fixing penalties for such offences. “A few weeks ago you wished to suspend a junior player for two weeks—now a representative player gets off with one week.” Mr H. Hendrick, referee in the StarOld Boys game, reported having ordered off J. Mattingly for questioning his decisions. Mattingly was not present at the meeting and it was decided to request him to appear before the committee at the next meeting. He is suspended in the meantime.

Advice was received in a letter from Major A. J. Moore that the Burnham Army team to play at Invercargill on July 6 would consist of 19 players, a manager and an assistant manager. The team would arrive in Invercargill by the evening express train on Friday, July 5, and would return to Burnham on Sunday night, July 7. A curtain-raiser between the Makarewa.and Marist fourth grade teams will be played before the patriotic match. The Battalion Band has been engaged and it was decided to - invite the Southland Boys’ High School jDrum, Trumpet, and Bugle Band to 'take part in a display at the ground. It was decided to cancel all club games on July 6. Mr R. G. Webb was appointed coach of the Southland team.

On the suggestion of the Otago Rugby Union it was decided not to play the annual sub-unions’ match between Otago and Southland this year. C. Murdoch was granted a transfer from the Albion Club (Gore) to Pirates.
