PAYMENT OF WAGES SUBSIDY

SCHEME 13 MEN IN SOUTH INVERCARGILL Following an application to the Employment Bureau for a continuation of the full wages subsidy under Scheme No. 13 on road formation and drainage works, the South Invercargill Borough Council received a reply at its meeting last night. A letter from the bureau stated that while it was not possible to continue the subsidy on the full wages cost, it offered to contribute £4 a week a man for 20 registered eligible married men for a period of 13 weeks.

The Mayor (Mr Owen Smith) said a reply had already been given to the bureau that the council was not in a position to accept the reduced subsidy. Under the scheme proposed, the council would be required to pay 12/6 a man a week. The council had considered that it would be able to employ only three men under such a scheme.

The bureau had later advised that the subsidy on the present scale would be continued pending a review of the position.
