NEW ROLE FOR GARONNE

Merry Simon Being Schooled rAroa is well placed AT ASHBURTON Nominations for the Wellington meeting close on Monday. The first race at the Ashburton County meeting will start at 11.30 a.m. A High Fee At the stud in England the Derby winner Coronach stood at 300 guineas. Half And Half Half and Half will be an interesting newcomer to the hurdling ranks at Ashburton. Bright Prospects Schoolgirl has given the impression that she will not be long in hack company and she reads well among the hack sprinters on Saturday. A Change Ginger Rey, who raced in Southland last term, has joined T. Gunning s Oamaru team. Her form to date has been quite encouraging. May Race Again It was intended to retire Helen’s Bay to the stud but there is now a possibility of her being raced again., Special Force Special Force has been put aside for the remainder of the year. He promises to develop into a fine winner as a three-year-old next term. Lazybones In Form Wingatui running gives Lazybones a great chance among the open sprinters at Ashburton on Saturday. He appears to be racing much more solidly than formerly. / Well Represented Southland stables are strongly represented in the Dunedin Jockey Club s classic events for which entries of present yearlings were taken last week. Held In Trust During the current season apprentice jockeys have earned £14,672. Of this £6852 was credited to their employers, and £7820 held in trust for the apprentices. May Show Up Monipere showed at Wingatui that he has lost none of his pace on the flat as he was one of the leaders into the straight in the King George Handicap but then faded out. If he jumps at ail reasonably he should show up among the hurdlers at the Ashburton meeting. Well Placed

Raroa is nicely placed in the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday and with 8.11 she will outstay the majority in this field. Wingatui running showed her to be right at the top of her form while she rarely runs a bad race. She has been elected a good early favourite and appears entitled to this position.

Merry Simon Schooling A start has been made with the task of educating Merry Simon as a jumper, states a Christchurch report. He went very well in his initial effort over the pony hurdles. This w r as not really his first experience, as he did some jumping in Southland as a two-year-old. F. J. Boyle will not hurry him, the intention being to race him on the flat in the meantime, but it is hoped to have him ready to compete over hurdles at some of the spring meetings. A New Role

Garonne is to make his first appearance as a steeplechaser at the Oamaru meeting next month. It was only a fewweeks back that he first appeared as a hurdler and since he has won twice and been twice placed in six starts. It was intended to race him over country much earlier but the proficiency he showed.as a hurdler induced his connections to continue with him in this department. The Gascony gelding has done a good amount of jumping since joining F. J. Boyle’s team and is just the type to make a success as a ’chaser.

Promising Filly Sweet Mystery, who is engaged among the novices at Ashburton, is a three-year-old filly by Lord Warden from Satisfy, and thus ranks as a brother to Stolen March. Satisfy was got by Solferino from Satisfaction, the dam of Receipt, Battle Colours, Full Flight, Battle Hero and others. Receipt left Jack Ahoy and Settlement while Satisfaction’s dam, Satisfaire, produced, among others, Fairform, who is better known as the dam of Tauramai, Charmaine, Passaform and Rin Tin Tin in Southland. Sweet Mystery is described as a promsing filly and in her last start she finished second to Guilder at Washdyke. Stircoat In Favour Surcoat promises to start a good favourite for the Dromore Steeplechase at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday. The Philamor gelding has won in his last two starts while nis schooling at Riccarton during the past week , has been of an excellent standard. Cottingham has the best part to do to concede Surcoat 191 b, while Flashlight did not race on a recent northern tour because of a mishap. Courtyard has been outjumped in his schooling by Surcoat while Mount Vai is too unreliable. If he elected to race solidly he would make it interesting. Frenchy is one who may be expected to make a good showing. He is an excellent jumper and will more than hold his own in this field. Those further down in the weights do not appeal but Joy Boa would have a chance if he could be kept handy to the leaders. Surcoat and Frenchy appear to have the best credentials. Ashburton Riders
