The engagement is announced of Decima, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs George Dempster, Heriot street, Invercargill, and Alan, fifth son of Mr and Mrs A. A. Liddell, Otautau. The engagement is announced of Evelyn Doris, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Brazier, Nightcaps, and Len Anthony, only son of Mr L. Manghan, Palmerston North, and the late Mrs Manghan. Mrs J. H. Fulton, Earn street, left by the express on Thursday morning for a holiday in Auckland. Miss J. C. Slattery, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs G. A. Waddel, “Tainui, Bluff. Miss Joyce Gilmour, Herbert street, will leave on Monday to visit Mrs A. F Speight, Redcliff. A gathering of members of the Southland Travel Club will take place in H. and J. Smith’s tea-rooms on Monday at 3 p.m. The speaker will be Miss J. C. Slattery, of Auckland. The Countess of Orford, formerly of Auckland, who is at present in England, has turned her home, Rosemoor, Torrington, Devon, into a convalescent home for soldiers, and is running it herself. This year, for the first time, a woman member of the New Zealand Bank Officers’ Guild was elected to the position of executive councillor. She is Miss G. Balding, of the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington. Members of the Music Circle of the Southland Women’s Club who recently performed the musical play “Ye Olde Inn,” at the circle’s open night, will present the same programme at the Gore Women’s Club on Monday night. At Government House, Wellington, on Tuesday, more than 2000 garments for refugees were handed over officially by the New Zealand Union of Townswomen’s Guilds to the recentlyformed Lady Galway Patriotic Guild. The marriage will take place at St. John’s Church, Toorak, Melbourne, on June 25, of Valerie, daughter of Mr
and Mrs Gerald Anderson, Burnie Avenue, Toorak and James Newton, elder son of Mrs G. S. Langford, Lewis street, Invercargill, and the late Mr Langford. The Invercargill Miniature Rifle Sub-Association held another social evening in Smith’s hall lounge on Thursday night. The winners of the flag 500 were Mrs Pomeroy, Miss E. Murray and Miss G. Gilfedder. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs G. Robertson, Mrs C. E. Young and Mr L. R. Lyall.
