FULL CHECK ON ALIENS

POLICE ACTIVE IN SOUTHLAND

ITALIANS REQUIRED TO REGISTER A thorough check on aliens of enemy nationalities is being made in Southland by the Police Department. With the entry of Italy into the war against the Allies, the provision of the Alien Control Emergency Regulations, 1939, requiring the registration of all persons who are or have been nationals of an enemy state, now applies to Italians. They are required immediately to apply personally for registration to the officer in charge at the police station nearest to which the applicant resides. Under the regulations an alien is defined as a person of the age of 16 years or over who is not a British subject or who, notwithstanding that, he may also Joe a British subject by birth or naturalization or otherwise, is or at any time has been, according to the laws of any state with which his Majesty is at war, a national of that state. The .regulations exempt a person who has become a naturalized British subject at any time before August 4, 1914, and who has not at any time since ceased to be a British subject; a person born within his Majesty’s Dominions and allegiance whose parents became naturalized British subjects before that date, and who has not at any time since naturalization ceased to be a British subject; and any person born in New Zealand within his Majesty’s allegiance who has been continuously resident in New Zealand for the whole of his life. Police officials in Invercargill drew attention yesterday to tire provisions of the regulations requiring enemy aliens to obtain permission from the police before absenting themselves from their homes for any continuous period of 24 hours or more. Every registered alien, too, is required to notify change of abode within seven days of such change. Every alien, whether he be an enemy alien or not, is required to register. Another regulation makes it incumbent upon all German or Italian-born persons to surrender any firearms in their possession to the police.
