COUSIN BETTY’S LETTER
My Dear Cousins,
My helpers waited impatiently for your entries this week, and when Mr Postman arrived there was a rush to see the stories about your favourite part jof the Chronicle. It was almost like counting the votes in an election, and how pleased Percy and his friends were when they discovered that this letter topped the poll. It is the one part of our page in which they all have a hand, and it is the only medium through which they can speak to you and tell you what they are doing. So your choice was a popular one, my cousins. Percy Pencil, Isobel Inkpot, and all the others have asked me to say “Thank you,” for them. Mr Postman is another person who is very pleased this week. I do not know what we would do without him, for he brings your letters and entries which go to make up the Chronicle, and he also delivers enrolment cards, badges, letters and prizes to my cousins all over Southland. He enjoyed reading the poems about himself, and he says he will keep his copy of our page and read our verses whenever he forgets what a wonderful person he is! . I have some good news for many Little Southlanders. We have some new books in our library! New cousins are always joining the page and taking books, so it is difficult to keep a good, selection on the shelves. However, we now have some new stories, and if those members who have had books for some time will return them, we should have a full cupboard from which to choose.
Today I am changing the Art Club competition and setting a drawing for the underelevens and a painting for the twelve-and-overs. There is a fair amount of detail in the picture to be painted, so my big cousins will need to take great care and see what neat, dainty pictures they can make.
Your loving,
