PROGRESS LEAGUE IN WAR TIME
VALUE OF ACTIVITIES IS QUESTIONED
The' value of the activities of the Southland Progress League during time of war was questioned by Cr J. McNeill at the meeting of the Southland County Council, yesterday when consideration was being given to a request for a contribution to the funds of the league. "The executive of the league confidently trusts for the continued support of the local bodies of Southland,” stated a letter from the secretary of the league (Mr J. S. Dick). “Actually the income in recent years has just been sufficient to carry on. Your council’s contribution last year was £25, but if this amount could be raised somewhat this year it would be sincerely appreciated.” Cr McNeill said that he did not think the council should consider an increase in its contribution. “It is questionable,” he added, “whether the league, during the war, is going to be of any' material use. It does good work in normal times but it might as well go quietly during the war. I don’t want to kill the league altogether, but I don’t think we should give any increase.”
It was decided to make a contribution of £25.
