Farm Labour
( It is reported that in the past few months over 360 men in Auckland who were either drawing unemployment benefits or were on subsidized wages have been transferred to scheme 4b contract work. Scheme 4b ranks first because it is deemed of paramount importance as a war-time measure to increase the productivity of the country in order to supply the needs of Britain. The demand by farmers is progressively increasing for subsidized contract labour to undertake development or certain specified classes of maintenance work on farms. It is said that so far as is possible the Labour Department appears to be taking men in the Auckland district from localities where the work is to be undertaken, or as close thereto as can be arranged.
