DRUMMOND SWAMP

POSSIBLE SANCTUARY FOR WATER FOWL The establishment of a sanctuary for water fowl at the headwaters of the Waimatuku river, the site of which is a peat bog known as the Drummond swamp, is being considered by the Southland Acclimatization Society. Reporting on the area to the meeting of the council of the society last night Mr C. J. Evans, a ranger, said that there was a number of unoccupied Crown sections taken up some time ago and later abandoned as useless for agricultural purposes. Every section could be flooded by an embarkment along the lower or southern end and that would make a lake of hundreds of acres and create a number of narrow arms. No good agricultural land would be flooded on the back end of the sections, There was a creek running through the middle of the sections which would ensure sufficient water to keep the area flooded. It was decided to send the information on to the Department of Internal Affairs. I
