CHARGE FOR WATER IN SCHOOL BATHS
QUESTION PUT TO CITY COUNCIL Tlie works committee of the Invercargill City Council has had under consideration the charge to be fixed for the supply of water to city schools installing cold water swimming pools. At the meeting, of the council last'night a recommendation by the committee that in view of the climatic conditions for such pools the matter be deferred until considered by the schools, was adopted. The city engineer (Mr F. M. Corkill) reported that the existing ordinary rate of charge for water is 1/8 for 1000 gallons. This rate should be raised because of the filtration rather than reduced. For primary schools water was supplied for sewerage and domestic purposes at 9d for 1000 gallons, plus a charge of 10/- a year for each closet. In view of the loss on the municipal baths it seemed undesirable that water should be supplied to competing institutions at e. figure less than the normal selling price. It had also to be pointed out that swimming pool demand for water would be when it could least be spared, so that there should be no concessions. Cr A. W. Jones criticized the report as weak. He said tire committee had not been asked for a statement on the climate; it hud been asked a straightforward question about the cost of water. There were two schools in Invercargill where the cost of swimming pools was practically guaranteed and he had been asked by a representative body of citizens, what would be the cost of water. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. R. Martin) said that if the committee had been told what quantity of water would be required it could have given a direct answer. The charge would not be less than tlie present charge of 1/8 per 1000 gallons, said the chairman of the works committee (Cr A. Scott).
The recommendation was adopted.
