Competitors in jhe pronunciation test at the Christchurch Competitions Society’s annual festival were given a list of 26 words. The elocution judge, Mr W. Russell Wood; of Dunedin, said that the words with which the competitors had the most difficulty included:—Cayenne, decade, gnu, khedive, maniacal, obsequies, pariah, timbre, and vagaries. Of these, competitors were least familiar of all with “obsequies.” .
