NORTHEND CLUB ANNUAL REPORT OF ACTIVITIES A satisfactory year generally is disclosed in the annual report of the activities for the 1939-40 season of the Northend Bowling Club to be submitted at the annual meeting of members tomorrow night. “The finances are in a satisfactory condition, but consideration will have to be given in the near future to the reconditioning and painting of the pavilion,” the report states. “Beginning the season with a credit balance of £23/9/5 we have the sum of £27/18/5 in hand. The subscriptions amount to £139/6/6 compared with £156 last season, but it must be taken into account that a larger number of outstanding subscriptions were collected the previous year compared with last season. On the expenditure side, lighting, heating, gas and water increased by £3/14/2 and the caretaker’s wages were increased from £B4 to £9O a year. “With the increased wages paid, extra expenditure on trophies and a decreased amount received in subscriptions as against the previous year, the profit on the year’s working was very small. A progressive fours tournament conducted on closing day produced £2/16/which was paid into the Southland ProUncial Patriotic Fund. Receipts from the social room totalled £24/19/6, a small increase on the previous year. “In spite of the unfavourable weather the playing surface of the green was of a particularly high order and shows that as the result of careful attention by the green ranger (Mr T. D. Pearce) and the greenkeeper (Mr W. Reid) it is rapidly recovering and by next season it should be back to the high standard in evidence a number of years back. The playing surface was greatly appreciated by visitors from many parts of the Dominion. CLUB COMPETITIONS ■ “The club’s competitions were won as follows: —Champion singles, A. V. Keast; runner-up, J. A. Wesney; champion pairs, L. Burgess and J. Ure; runnersup, W. Reid and S. C. K. Smith. Champion fours, G. Reid, T. Snow, D. J. Wesney, A. V. Keast; runners-up, J. Greer, W. Randle, C. Ji McEachran, W. J. Watson. Intermediate singles, J. O’Brien; runner-up, G. Reid. “The club was represented in the Southland Centre championships as follows: Champion singles, A. V. Keast. Shield Rink, G. Reid, T. Snow, D. J. Wesney, A. V. Keast. Mayor’s Pairs (Miller Cup): L. Burgess and J. Ure, W. Reid and S. C. K. Smith. “Because the club champion pairs event was not completed, the club was not represented in the champion of champion pairs event. It is pleasing to report the winning of the Mayor’s pairs competition, this being the first time the name of the Northend Club has been inscribed on the Miller Cup. “The Georgetown tournament was won by the following Northend rink: W. Reid, C. J. McEachran, A. V. Keast and S. C. K. Smith. “The Labour Day tournament at which a profit of £6 was made was won by the following rink: J. Gillanders, T. D. Pearce, W. Reid and G. L. Swift.”
