POLICE CONSTABLE ACQUITTED

CHARGE OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. After a retirement of three hours and 35 minutes the jury in the Supreme Court returned a verdict this evening of not guilty against Leonard Cook, a police constable who was charged with negligently driving a car and causing bodily injury to Alice Mildred Rickerby. The charge arose from an accident on February 3 when a car driven by Cook, in which. Miss Rickerby was a passenger, struck a truck and skidded and rolled over. The evidence, for the Crown was that the car driven by Cook was travelling at a high speed and that the driver of the truck, which was about to turn to the right at the time of the accident, gave a signal of his intention to turn. The accused and his passengers said that the speed of Cook’s car was moderate and that the truck driver gave no signal.
