FAT CATTLE SELL AT LATE RATES KEEN COMPETITION FOR FAT LAMBS (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 1. The entry of 325 fat cattle at the Burnside sale today included a few pens of prime sorts. The sale opened at late rates and continued without alteration. Extra prime bullocks made to £lB/12/6, prime £l5/12/6 to £l7/2/6, medium £ll/7/6 to £l3/12/6, light from £B/2/6. Extra prime cows and heifers realized up to £ll/17/6, prime £B/17/6 to £9/12/6, medium £6/17/6 to £7/17/6, light from £4/7/6. The store cattle were not an attractive lot, but a few pens of three and four-year-old steers brought to £lO/14/-. A medium entry of 1/00 fat sheep was forward, with a few trucks of prime wethers included. The rest of the yarding was made up of medium to light descriptions. MARKET FAT SHEEP AND CATTLE PRICES IMPROVE (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 1. At the Addington market strong entries of fat sheep, fat lambs, and prime fat cattle were forward. Good quality fat sheep showed an increase of 2/- to 2/C a head. There was a good yarding of fat cattle which sold at prices dearer by 1/6 per 1001 b. About 2000 more store sheep were entered and the sale was a shade weaker, except for best soundmouthed sorts. There was an over supply of old ewes and this class was inclined to ease as the sale progressed. Outstanding English Leicester-Romney Cross ewe lambs sold at 23/5, good rape sorts 18/1 and 20/-, average lambs 11/6 to 15/6, rough sorts 6/-. One of the best sales of two-tooth was 19/9 for a truck. Other pens of better-class fine wools sold at 17/6. A station line of 250 sound-mouth ewes sold from 13/6 to 14 /-' . • j The fat lamb sale on the increased export schedule of 9d per lb for 361 b lambs or under, was the best for some time. Exporters forced the pace and butchers had difficulty in filling requirements. Butchers’ sorts sold at an advance on the schedule and exporters paid a shade more in some cases. The fat sheep entry was slightly smaller, comprising 5000 head. The quality was the best for some time. Prime heavy wethers forward from the Chatham Islands and locally-fattened Romney Cross Chatham wethers of show standard brought up to 39/1. The average for a truck lot of 56 was 35/-. The market opened with a sharp advance on recent rates, with good ewes 2/6 a head better. Medium to good wethers were about the same and heavy wethers from 1/6 to 2/- better. Exporters paid up to and in advance of the export schedule. Altogether it was a buoyant market. Best wethers made from 32/- to 39/-, good 27/- to 31/-, ordinary sorts 23/- to 26/-; prime ewes 25/- to 29/-, ordinary 15/- to 20/-, freezing to 16/-. Fat cattle rose to overflow proportions with an entry of 628 head. There was a better display of finished cattle. The improvement in values continued and prices were up to 15/- better than last week. There was little change in values for medium and rough sorts. Prime steers made from £l5 to £l9, light to medium £B/15/- to £ll, good beef made from 36/- to 38/6, with tops to 40/- per 1001 b. Medium realized from 32/- to 35/- and rough down to 27/-. In the fat pig section there was an easier sale of porkers.
