SOUTHERN SOUTHLAND FEDERATION MONTHLY MEETING OF WINTON BRANCH There was a good attendance at the Winton Women's Institute social in honour of two members who have been married recently, Mrs Gerrard (nee Gladys Symons) and Mrs McLeod (nee Jean McDougal). The evening was spent in dancing, games and competitions. Songs were contributed by Mrs Young and Mrs Eastlake, pianoforte solos were given by May Butler and Ethel Young. Mrs Weftb asked the guests to accept of the members. Mrs McKenzie also a gift and conveyed the best wishes extended congratulations. Tvlrs Gerrard and Nirs Reynolds sup—plied the music for the dancing. SPAR BUSH Mrs Dalrymple presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Spar Bush Women’s Institute. The motto was: “A good man is kinder to his enemy than a bad man is to his friends,” and the roll call, ‘‘The meeting you enjoyed most last year.” Delegates were appointed to attend the annual council meeting. Mrs C. Donald, sen., and Miss M. Dalrymple gave an interesting talk on their visit to the Centennial Exhibition. An interesting demonstration on the cutting out of frocks was given by Mrs Barber. Competitions resulted: Trifle, Mrs C. Donald sen., 1, Mrs J. McDonough 2, Mrs C. McCrostie 3. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs C. Donald sen., and Mrs Dawson. WOODEND Mrs V. Jordan presided over a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Woodend Women’s Institute. After singing the “Ode” and regeating the “Aspirations,” the members stood in silence for a minute as a mark of respect to the memory of the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. Three new members were welcomed. The motto was: “Speech is silver and silence is golden.” The roll call was: “Suggestions for competitions for birthday party and 1/- for soldiers’ parcels.” The competitions resulted: Six heaviest potatoes, Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Johnstone 2, Mrs W. Jordan 3. Blooms; Mrs Smith 1. An invitation to the Waianiwa institute’s birthday party was received. Mrs Leith was appointed delegate to the Dominion conference in July. Members decided to help with the display of goods at the Winter Show. The afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Leith and Lilley. CLIFTON Mrs Jordan presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Clifton Women’s Institute. After the “Ode” and “Aspirations” the members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. The motto was: “The best time to hang on is when the average fellow vzould fall off.” The roll call was: “6d mystery parcel answered by all.” Mrs Jordan and Mrs Boyd were appointed delegates to the annual council meeting. Mrs Mulvey was appointed i delegate to the conference in Wellington in July. Afternoon tea was served. WAIANIWA Mrs Bruland presided at the April> meeting of the Waianiwa Women’s Institute. The meeting opened with the singing of the “Ode” and the reading of the Creed. ! The correspondence dealt with included a letter from the Home Science Department of the Otago University about lectures.

Final arrngements were made for the birthday party. Competitions resulted: Best ironed supper cloth, Miss G. Ronald 1, Mrs Bruland 2, Mrs V. Wilson 3; date scones, Mrs Suggate 1, Mrs Hunter 2, Mrs Robertson 3; best bloom, Mrs Bruland 1, Miss Bruland 2, Mrs Suggate 3; best dress made from 5/- worth of material, Mrs I. Robertson 1, Mrs J. Brown and Mrs V. Wilson 2 equal, Mrs Hunter 4. Supper was handed round by the hostesses and the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. KENNINGTON Mrs S. J. Henderson presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Kennington Women’s Institute. Before the meeting members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. The roll call was “Subscriptions due, and a book for military camp,” the motto being “No one is useless in the world who lightens the burden of it for anyone else.” Two new members were enrolled. Mrs E. Riddle was appointed competition secretary, and Mrs Sampson Press correspondent. Mrs Shillds and Miss A. Alexander were appointed delegates to the council meeting. It was agreed to hold the birthday party in May, the function to take the form of a social and dance. During the social half hour the aggregate prizes for the year were presented. The best bloom prize donated by Mrs Hargest was won by Mrs A. Henderson. Competitions: Mrs S. J. Henderson 1, Mrs A. Henderson 2, Mrs Lyall 3. Henderson 3 equal. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Johnstone and G. Henderson and Miss A. Alexander. MANDEVILLE The monthly meeting of the Mandeville Women’s Institute was held in the hall. Mrs D. Collett presided over a large attendance. During the proceedings a presentation was made to Miss Margaret Roche, who has recently resigned the position of librarian, to Miss F. Horrell for her services as treasurer, and to Miss Emily Horrell on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Competitions resulted: Bouquet: Miss Loma McFadyen 1, Mrs McFayden and Mrs Henderson second equal. Shoulder spray: Mrs Wayte sen., 1, Mrs G. Wayte 2. Meat Pie: Mrs McFayden 1, Mrs G. Wayte 2. , During the month seven parcels of

soldiers’ comforts were delivered. The annual birthday will be held on May 2 and it was decided to devote a portion of that afternoon to the children’s items and games. The meeting ended with the singing of the National Anthem. OHAI Mrs Bowman presided over a fair attendance of members and several visitors' at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute. A welcome was extended to the visitors present. The Returned Soldiers’ Association appeal for members to sell poppies met with a ready response. Four members were appointed as delegates to the district patriotic meeting. The roll call was: “My pet economy and a magazine for soldiers.” For the Golden Thread Mrs McNeilage gave a talk m the Exhibition, Mrs Mcßae moving a hearty vote of thanks. Miss Irene Smith gave solos during the social half-hour, .Mrs Dixon acting as accompanist. Community singing proved popular. Opportunity was taken to extend congratulations to Mrs Graham on attaining her eightieth birthday. Mrs Bowman presented her with a dainty bouquet donated by Mrs Giles. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames A. Lowrey, R. Murray, D. Nicol

DIPTON The monthly meeting of the Dipton Women’s Institute was held in the Public Library, when Miss Shand presided over a fair attendance 6f members. It was decided to send a small donation for the executive funds and to send a delegate to the Dominion Conference. The roll call was “Sing, say and pay your subscription.” Miss Shand read an interesting paper on Sir Samuel Hoare. Miss J. Wood then gave a talk on the Centennial Exhibition. During the social half-hour the opportunity was taken to honour Miss Mavis Craig on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Miss Craig was given a parting gift. Competition winners during the social half-hour were:—Miss J. Wood (articles found in pantry); Miss J. Wood and Mrs Whitaker (jumbled flowers). Monthly competitions resulted:—Best

Whitaker 2, Mrs ,E. O’Callaghan 3. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. HAWTHORNDALE There was a good attendance of members at the first monthly meeting for 1940 of the Hawthorndale Women’s Institute. The newly-elected president, Mrs Davie, presided. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. It was decided that members bring 1/each evening for Patriotic Funds. The social half hour was conducted by Mrs Davie, an amusing competition being won by Mrs Goodsir. The hostesses, Mesdames Scott, O’Brien and Middlemiss served supper. The evening ended with the singing of the “Ode.” WAITANE At the April meeting of the Waitane Women’s Institute 12 members attended. The motto was, “Lord bless you sir, there’s good and bad in everyone: even in the rotten apple the pips are all

right.” The roll call was, “Pay your subscription.” Delegates were appointed to attend the meetings of the Eastern Southland Farmers’ Women’s Institute at Gore, Mesdames W. Young and B. Ross being selected. An interesting demonstration on sugarbag mat making was given by Mrs A. O. Ross. A jumbled names competition was held, and resulted in a win for Miss A. Sheehan. The competition for the month, a plate of shortbread, resulted: Miss Sheehan 1, Mrs B. Ross 2. The hostesses were Miss N. Young and Mrs B. Ross. MATAURA A large number of members attended the April meeting of the Mataura Women’s Institute. Mrs S. E. Smith presided. “Promise little and do much” was the motto and the roll call was “A song learned at school.” The entertainment committee stated that it had arranged to take a concert party to the Waikaka Women’s Institute meeting in May, and also to the Gore Institute birthday party. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mrs Kelso, Dominion organizer, complimenting her on her excellent services for the 'movement since her appointment. Mesdames W. Nolan, J. McGregor and W. Shore were welcomed as new

members. Regret was expressed at the departure of Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon for Dunedin and good wishes were extended to her.

The afternoon’s musical programme dealt with the works of Schubert. Miss Speden provided records of the work of the composer, while Mrs McConnell read a paper on the subject prepared by Mrs R. Speden, of Kaka Point. Mrs Hubener and Mrs Watson acted as soloists, with Mrs Richardson as accompanist.

The election of officers resulted:— President, Mrs S. E. Smith (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mesdames T. Piercy and C. D. McConnell; secretary, Mrs T. J. Quilter; treasurer, Mrs Poskitt; committee, Mesdames F. Bryant, L. J. Brazier, R. Haywood, C. D. McConnell, T. J. Quilter, J. Poskitt, A. Turner, T. Piercy, J. H. Stalker, C. D. Taylor, S. E. Smith and Miss Stickle.

Sub-committees were appointed as follow:—Entertainment, Mrs A. Turner (convener); drama, Mrs McConnell; gardening, Mrs Brazier; welfare, Mrs Taylor; syllabus, Mrs Piercy; market table, Mrs Stalker; competitions, Mrs Bryant; “Home and Country,” Miss Stickle.
