MANY PERSONS LATE FOR WORK

INNOCENT VICTIMS OF TRAMWAY DISPUTE

(United Press Association)

AUCKLAND, April 30.

Thousands of Auckland citizens were late for work today. The trams seemed to be stopping and starting all the time with little speed between stops. The travellers realized they were innocent victims of a dispute between the tramway employees and the Transport Board over wages claims. Motormen and conductors claim they are working in accordance with “Safety First” regulations, conductors making sure that the back platforms are clear before moving away from safety zones. The tramwaymen contend that if certain regulations designed for safety of the public are strictly adhered to it will be impossible for the tramway service to work smoothly to schedule. Many passengers left the trams before reaching the city and arrived at their destinations well ahead of their trams.

Reviewing the history of the present dispute, the Press Committee of the Tramways Union said the men at a mass meeting decided to stick solidly for an increase in wages of 8 per cent., corresponding to the increased cost of living. The men also resolved that, failing an agreement being reached at the board meeting yesterday, the regulations as provided for in the service be put into effect this mornng. The men contend that their claim is just and that there L no need whatever for it to be referred to the Arbitration Court.

The chairman of the Transport Board (Mr W. H. Nagle) in an interview, outlined the events leading to the present trouble, but indicated that at this stage he did not intend to comment on the position.
