INCREASED WAGES

NEW ZEALAND CYCLE WORKERS

A 40-hour week and an increase in wages are provided for in the New Zealand Cycle Workers’ Award, which has just been issued by the Arbitration Court. The principal matters referred to the Court for settlement were classification, hours, wages, proportion and conditions for assistants. Provision has been made in the award for the inclusion of cycle stand attendants. The hours of work for mass production factories have been more definitely specified. The minimum wage for trained adult workers has been increased to 2/71 an hour. This increase restores the hourly wage of these workers to the same relative position that it occupied in comparison with the rate paid to skilled trades before 1938, that is to say, lid an hour below the standard skilled rate of 2/9. The maximum proportion of juniors in mass production factories has been reduced to two to one. The two scales of wages for assistants have been discarded and replaced with a new scale which is in line with the scales how being adopted in similar industries. A number of other minor amendments to the wording has also been made.
