BABY DUMPLING’S FRIEND
FAMOUS DOG OF “BLONDIE” COMEDIES Two years ago, Rennie Renfro, Hollyword business man, paid fifty cents for a puppy. Recently he insured that dog for £lO,OOO. The dog is Daisy, famous as Baby Dumpling’s pal in Columbia’s “Blondie” comedies. Renfro first saw him in a film city pet shop, liked his friendliness and wistfulness and bought him for a half dollar. The puppy boasted no pedigree, but showed an infinite capacity for mastering tricks. For that reason, Renfro entered him in the competition sponsored by Columbia, in search of a dog which could play the canine character created by Chic Young in his popular “Blondie” comic strip. To Renfro’s surprise, his dog won the role from a field of more than 200 candidates and promptly became a female impersonator to comply with script requirements. Now appearing in the fifth picture of the series, “Blondie On A Budget,” with Penny Singleton, Arthur Lake and Larry Simms, Daisy has become one of the best known dog stars in screen history. A month ago Renfro refused an offer of £5OOO for his pet.
