Field has arrived to take up his duties as conservator at Invercargill. Before leaving for Christchurch Mr Perham was entertained at a social evening by the staff of the Southland region of the State Forest Service. In the absence of the senior ranger (Mr D. J. Buchanan), Mr J. Armstrong, forest ranger in charge of the Conical Hill forest, presented Mr and Mrs Perham with several valuable gifts, and an illuminated address bearing the names of all members of the Southland staff. Mr Armstrong referred to Mr Perham’s service for 10 years in the Southland region. Mr Armstrong expressed the regret of all members of the staff at Mr Perham’s departure from the region and congratulated him on his promotion to the rank of conservator of forests. Messrs C. O. Bridgeman, on behalf of the field staff, and M. N. Quill, on behalf of the regional office staff, also spoke. In his reply Mr Perham expressed his appreciation of the happy relations which had existed between himself and all members of the staff, and particularly emphasized the loyalty and faithful service given by all, more especially during the strenuous time in which he had been in control of the region. PRESENTATION TO RANGERS Another feature of the evening was the presentation of farewell gifts to Forest Rangers J. Johnson and D. R. Anderson, both of whom are transferring to Kaingaroa forest, Rotorua. Mr Bridgeman, in making these presentations expressed the wishes of all present for the future success of these officers in their new sphere of activity. Messrs Johnson and Anderson suitably replied. Opportunity was also taken to welcome Mr Field and Mrs Field. Mr Field, in thanking the staff for its welcome, asked for the same co-operation as had been accorded to Messrs Perham and N. J. Dolamore.

Members of the staff and employees were present from Tapanui, Kelso, Conical Hill, Riverton and Hedgehope, and the evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with competitions and musical and other items. Competition winners were Mrs McKee and Messrs Johnson and Armstrong. A lucky spot dance was won by Miss A. Spencer and Mr J. Johnson. Items were contributed by Miss Spencer (recitations) and Misses Gardiner and Burgess (pianoforte duet). Music for the dance was supplied by Mr G. Lindsay and extras by Mr W. O’Sullivan. Mr C.
