SOUTHLANDERS IN ARMY TEAMS GAMES AT CHRISTCHURCH ON SATURDAY Several Southlanders and former Southlanders took part in the Army games at Christchurch on Saturday. In the main game between the Trentham and Burnham Army teams Lieutenant G. Baker, former Old Boys forward, played for Trentham and Corporal W. A. Morrison (Pirates) and Private P. L. Lynch (former Old Boys forward) played for Burnham. In the Air Force game played between teams of North and South Island players from the Royal New Zealand Air Force station at Wigram Southlanders taking part included J. Dunstan, former Southland forward who went to Melbourne and played for Victoria, and E. A. Wyatt, who played in the five-eighths line for Old Boys last season. WAIAU JUNIORS WIN AT TUATAPERE WESTERN STAR BEATEN BY THREE POINTS In the first match of the competition, the Waiau junior team beat Western Star juniors on the Tuatapere grounds by nine points (three unconverted tries) to six points (two unconverted tries). The teams were:— Western Star.—G. Stewart, H. Hutton, G. Dowling, A. Campbell, R. Ronald, V. Dowling, W. Carr, J. Minty, A. Wilson (captain), A. Todd, P, White, J. Browne, F. Batt, W. Minty, S. Soon after the start of play D. Favel retired injured, and was replaced by W. Scott. From the kick-off Western Star attacked and after a few minutes of strenuous play, V. Dowling scored, the kick failing. From a series of scrums near the Waiau line, G. Dowling dived across and scored for Western Star. The kick failed. Up to this stage Western Star had the advantage, but towards the end of the half, Waiau maintained a strong attack and Western Star had to force frequently. From a good passing rush, L. Bennett scored well out. The kick failed. Just before time, A. Erskine dived across from a ruck well out and scored. The halftime scores were:— Waiau 6, Western Star 6 In the second half both sides pressed strongly and frequently only good play by the full-backs prevented a score. Waiau forwards made a break to Western Star’s goal line where play was halted by an infringement. From a ruck following the scrum, Cockroft dribbled through. A Western Star player kicked the ball into his arms and he scored a good try. The try was not converted. The game ended with the scores: Waiau 9, Western Star 6
