NUMBER PLATES FOR CARS

RELICENSING BEGINS ON MONDAY EARLY APPLICATIONS ARE ADVISED Relicensing of motor-vehicles for the year June 1, 1940, to May 31, 1941, will begin at post offices on Monday. Plates have arrived later than usual and a busy time is expected. The lettering and border lines of the new plates are white on a Venetian red background. Numbers allotted Southland are 39,501 to 49,500. The cost of plates, relicensing fees and insurance premiums are the same as for the current year. The new plates must not be affixed before June 1, and motorvehicles used after May 31 with the present issue, render their owners liable to prosecution. New motor spirit coupons for use from June 1 will also be made at the time of relicensing. They are as follows: — One gallon (violet background), for motor-cycles; two gallons (red background), for private cars under 9.5 h.p.; three gallons (yellow background), for private cars from 9.5 to 14.5 h.p.; four gallons (green background), for private cars over 14.5 h.p. These will permit motor-cycles to obtain three gallons of motor spirit monthly, private cars under 9.5 h.p., six gallons; 9.5 to 14.5 h.p., nine gallons; and over 14.5 h.p., 12 gallons monthly. Coupons will not be issued for other vehicles used for private purposes but the equivalent quantities by licence will be granted in such special circumstances. The present salmon and white coloured coupons become obsolete at the end of May and should then be destroyed. Coupons should be safeguarded against loss or destruction as duplicate sets are issued at a cost of 5/plus 3/- duty. EARLY APPLICATIONS Motor-vehicle owners are requested by the Chief Postmaster, Invercargill, to relicense their vehicles early and so avoid the congestion and unavoidable delays which must occur if applications are withheld until towards the end of May. The full co-operation of owners will be appreciated by postal officers. As formerly, the work at the Invercargill Chief Post Office will be undertaken upstairs and the same procedure will be followed; owners complete the form of application for relicensing and the insurance nomination form and hand them in at one end of a long counter. A special staff will check the forms against the existing record cards, insert the fees and hand the forms and record card to the applicant for presentation to the tellers at the other end of the counter where the charges will be collected and the plates and motor spirit coupons issued. During the busiest period, towards the end of May, and at the beginning of June, applications for oil fuel licences will be accepted and dealt with in a separate room upstairs in order to expedite the work of relicensing the motor-vehicles.
