Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, arrived in Invercargill by the express yesterday afternoon. He visited Bluff later in the afternoon.

Mr H. K. Slocombe, who has been acting accountant at the Bank of New South Wales, Invercargill, for the past six months, has been appointed accountant.

Mr H. D. Norman, for many years chairman of directors of the Tuatapere Dairy Factory Company, Limited, has been nominated as a candidate for the position of director on the board of the South Island Dairy Association Limited. Mr L. F. Hannon, a member of the literary staff of The Southland Times, who has enlisted in the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, left by the express yesterday afternoon for Trentham. Mr Hannon was bidden farewell by members of the Invercargill branch of the New Zealand Journalists’ Association at th' annual meeting on Saturday night. He was given a shaving outfit, and members wished him a successful career in the Army.

. Mr P. McMullan has received advice that he has been accepted as an airman pilot in the New Zealand Air Force. He will report to Levin early next week for training. Mr A. Orton, stationmaster at Wellington during the busiest period experienced by the Railways Department for many years, retired on superannuation at the end of last week after completing 40 years’ service. He was appointed stationmaster at Wellington on May 16, 1938, and was in charge of the station during the exceptionally busy months which followed the opening of the Centennial Exhibition last November. Special troop trains intermingled with heavy holiday traffic added to the responsibilities of the stationmaster and his staff. Mr Orton’s successor, Mr R. S. Allwright, formerly stationmaster at Wanganui, has taken up his new duties.—Press Association.

Mr M. J. Glubb, a member of the telegraph engineer’s Staff of the Invercargill Post and Telegraph Office, who has been transferred to a position in the stores branch of the department at the Dunedin Post Office, will leave for Dunedin by the express tomorrow afternoon.

Mr W. H. Ferens, organizer for the Otago Early Settlers’ Association, who has been spending a holiday with relations in Invercargill, returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon.

The death of Mr T. A. Clark, a former Southland Rugby representative, was referred to by the president of the Southland Rugby Union (Mr N. R. Brown) at a meeting of the union last night. Mr Clark was a member of the Southern, Britannia and Pirates clubs and played for Southland from 1905 to 1908 and in 1913 and 1914. A resolution of sympathy was carried.
