OPENINGOFSEASON TOURNAMENT S, ROBSON WINS MEN’S SINGLES

The opening tournament of the season was continued last evening when men’s singles, women’s singles and men’s doubles handicap matches were played. A consolation singles event for men was also held. In the men’s singles final S. Robson defeated Monday evening’s winner B. Hollander 31-17 after a game in which Robson’s driving proved to be the deciding factor. The women s singles was a two life event arid after Mrs J. Marriott and Mrs A. R. Macnee played three times the former won the deciding match 31-27. The men’s doubles event was won by Ferguson and Breayley who had too strong a combination for the other pairs in this competition. T. Breayley won the consolation singles from M. Blaike by 34 points to 32 after a hard game. The tournament will be concluded tonight when novice singles handicaps for men and women will be held. Mixed doubles events will also be played. ANNUAL MEETING OF LADIES’ CLUB “The club has had another successful year; it has a membership of 28 and it finished the year with a credit balance of £l2/7/11,” stated the annual report of the Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club, which was submitted to the annual meeting of members last night. “The club wishes to congratulate Miss T. James on winning the Southland ladies’ championship. Also Mrs Doake of being runner-up in the New Zealand ladies’ championship; also all those who represented Southland against Otago. “Regret at the death of Miss F. Burdon was expressed. “To Nursing Sister C. Golden of the Fortrose Club, who has enlisted for service overseas, we wish a safe and speedy return to our shores. “The season finished with a very successful dance held at Elmwood Garden where the various trophies won by members were presented.” The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
