Sutherland Made Great Impression
A. G. Sutherland, who of all the wingers who appeared in the New Zealand Rugby trials last season made the greatest impression, is another Southland footballer to enlist in the Air Force, states a Wellington writer. He will, however, be available for the greater part of the season. Had an All Black side been chosen last year Sutherland must have gone into it, and he would have been a certainty for the South African tour had there been one. The Southland man showed considerable promise at the 1937 trials and he very definitely made the grade last year. Maybe he is not a great winger yet, not great in the sense that he would rank very high when compared with New Zealand’s best three-quarters down through the years, but in the North-South game he showed refreshing resource and used his burly shoulders to great advantage in tearaway rushes down the touchline. He took no end of stopping.
