INVERCARGILL SWORD CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS The membership of the club at the conclusion of the year’s work stood at 18, which was quite satisfactory. The club was making a very earnest endeavour to have an increased membership for the coming season, stated the report of the Invercargill Sword Club which was adopted at the annual meeting last night. The president, Mr Ross Mitchell, presided. Through the concentrated efforts of the committee and the members, the club was at present in a much more favourable condition financially, the credit balance at the Invercargill Savings Bank being £l7/19/2, said the report. The winners of the 1939 club championships were: Men. J. B. Aitchison; women, Miss Z. Smith. At the request of the Amateur Sports Association, in co-operation with other local sports bodies, the club staged a comprehensive display in the Victoria Hall. It met with very favourable comment. The contest between Canterbury and Southland resulted in a win for Canterbury, although the Invercargill Club won the pewter mug which is for a contest between the Invercargill Sword Club and the Christchurch Sword Club. The club was very pleased to have a visit from the Gore Sword Club, which, although new to the art, put up a very fine performance in a friendly contest. During the season the club lost three of its enthusiastic members, Mr Roger C. Black and Mr George Taylor, who had joined the ranks of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and* Mr H. McLachlan, who was overseas with the Ist Echelon of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The following officers were elected: President, Mr Ross Mitchell; vicepresident, Mr G. M. Thom; secretary, Mr R. Woodward; treasurer, Mr H. Simpson; club captain, Mr G. M. Thom; vice-captain, Miss Z. Smith; committee, the office-bearers and Miss H. Martin and Mr J. B. Aitchison; auditor, Mr J. R. Officer. It was decided to open the season on March 6. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Mitchell for the use of his garage last season.
