The engagement is announced of Joyce Ellen, only daughter of Mrs C.. R. Challis, formerly of Alice street, Invercargill, and now of Wellington, ana the late Mr Bain Challis, and Dougal Daniel, second son of Mrs E. E. Crawford, Takapuna, Auckland, and the late Mr D. Crawford. Miss Peggy Ball, Nelson street, leaves for Dunedin tomorrow. Mr and Mrs H. T. W. Denton, Gala street, are visitors to Dunedin. Mrs R. D. Stewart, Thomson street, leaves today to spend a holiday in Dunedin. Mrs T. F. Gilkison, Grey street, returned yesterday from a holiday at Paradise. Mrs L. Cagney, Lewis street, was hostess at a bridge afternoon yesterday in honour of Mrs S. J. Irwin. Mrs F. Berndston and Miss E. Nelson, of Christchurch, are the guests of Mrs Eustace Russell, Herbert street. Miss Doris Slater, who has been librarian of the Gore Public Library for the last five years, has tendered her resignation to the library committee to accept a position in Dunedin. Before coming to Gore Miss Slater was for a number of years attached to the staff Of the Dunedin Public Library. Mrs M. Young, Denton street, Gore, has received an invitation from the Mayor of Auckland to attend a wel-come-home function in honour of the men aboard H.M.S. Achilles, which is expected to reach Auckland within a few days. Mrs Young’s son, Mr Albert Young, is a rating aboard the vessel which made history in the battle with the Admiral Graf Spee. ■>. The death occurred in Palmerston North recently of Sir Philip Arthur Osborne-Gibbes, only son of the late Sir Edward and Lady Osborne-Gibbes. One of Sir Philip’s two sisters, Mrs A. de R. Barclay, now of Sydney, was well-known in Invercargill, where her husband was for a period sub-editor of The Southland Times. Mrs Barclay was champion of the Invercargill Ladies’ Golf Club.
The final district organizing meeting in connection with the Women’s Patriotic Committee was held in Knox Hall yesterday afternoon. Two subcommittees were formed, South Invercargill A, and South Invercargill B. The members if the A sub-committee are: Chairman, Mrs D. Mulvey; secretary, Mrs J. Morrison; members, Mesdames A. G. Lea, F. Anderson, W. Middleton, A. H. Lillicrap. The B subcommittee is as follows: Chairman, Mrs J. Gough; secretary and treasurer, Mrs F. N. Watson; members, Mesdames G. Hesselin, E. Boyd, W. E. Holder, J. Baillie, J. A. Forrester, D. McPherson. During the afternoon thosq present volunteered to make contributions to the fund for the colours of the’ sth Brigade of the 2nd Echelon, and a collection was made.
