The Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan) was granted leave of absence from the Bluff Harbour Board last night during his active military service for the remainder of his term as a member of the board.

Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., will leave by the express this morning for Wellington. He will be away a week. Mr A. N. Grigg, M.P. for Mid-Can-terbury, arrived in Invercargill by the express last night. Mr W. J. A. McGregor, chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board, the Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C., Mr W. A. Ott, members of the board, and Mr R. N. Porter, secretary, will attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Harbour Boards Association at Wellington beginning next Wednesday. Major C. E. Lees, who attended a conference of recruiting committees at Wellington, has returned to Invercargill. Mr James Hunter, of Wanganui, a member of the 1905 All Black team, is visiting Invercargill and will attend the sale of Waitoru Romney sheep today.

The Rev. W. H. Greenslade and the Rev. G. B. Hinton left yesterday for Dunedin to attend the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand.

Mr M. R. Head, a former pupil of the Southland Boys’ High School, succeeded in his final examination for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering with honours. Mr W. Taylor, -who has been yardman at the Lorneville stock sale for 23 years, has informed the directors of the Invercargill Saleyards Co. that he wishes to retire. The company has appointed his son, Mr L. Taylor, yardman and has decided to retain the services of Mr W. Taylor in an advisory capacity.

Mr W. Rodgers, who recently retired from the position of district traffic manager at Christchurch, after 40 years’ service with the Railway Department, was met by friends and made a presentation at a smoke concert in his honour on Saturday evening. Mr Rodgers, who was formerly stationed in Invercargill, was given a wallet of notes, and Mrs Rodgers was presented with a bouquet and two travelling cases. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan), the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), and the General Manager of Railways (Mr E. Casey) were present. The Minister welcomed Mr G. H. McLean, who succeeds Mr Rodgers. The chairman was Mr J.' Binsted (locomotive engineer).

At a meeting yesterday of the Southland executive committee of the National Federation of Health Camps Mr L. W. Spencer was reappointed honorary secretary and treasurer. During Mr Spencers absence overseas Mr J. Pickard acted in these positions. Mr Pickard is chairman of the executive of the Southland Children’s Health Camp Association.

Mr and Mrs C. G. Teschemaker have returned to make their home in the Dominion after an absence of 25 years. Mr Teschemaker was a pastoralist near Oamaru and now has similar interests in South America from where they have come by way of Great Britain.— Press Association.
