BLISSFUL LADY’S FORM

Colonel Rouge Well Related SURPRISING SUPPORT FOR CROSS ROSE Handicaps for the Birchwood Hunt meeting are due on Saturday. Nominations for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps close on Friday. Nominations for the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting are due on Monday. Otautau Meeting The Otautau Racing Club will hold its annual fixture at Invercargill on April 20. Below Form Royal Money appears to have gone off and showed little dash in his two races at Winton. Slamannan An early novice success should soon come the way of Slamannan. His two Winton seconds were worth-while placings. Bally Brit Bally Brit looked on the big side when produced in the Turi Steeplechase and he was going well until he came to grief at the sod wall. First Appearance In Flight is a good type of galloperbut the three-year-old has ideas of his own. He took no part in the Trial Stakes at Winton. Game Effort Peony Rose made a game effort to concede 161 b to Valantua over a mile but found the effort, beyond her. In her present form she will be given a chance at Wingatui. Jockey Fined H. Phillips, rider of Black Bard, who finished fourth in the Benmore Handicap at Winton on Saturday, was fined £1 for failing to weigh-in. Tired Badly Osculate showed great dash in taking his fences on Saturday but after putting a break on his field early he tired badly with half a mile to go. Corban Reappears Corban, who usually races well when fresh, was the only one who looked like making a race of it with Guste on Saturday. He will be improved by the race. Excellent Entries The nominations received for the Birchwood Hunt’s jubilee meeting on March 9 are the best received by the hunt for several years and there is every promise of a record meeting being held. High-class Sprinter Phalanx has still to be rated one of the best sprinters in the province. In spite of his 9.3 he beat the open sprinters at Winton in hollow fashion and there-will be excellent opportunities to place him to advantage at coming meetings. Sound Stayer Although there is not a great deal of him there is no doubting Guste’s gameness. He did not jump too well the first day at Winton but on Saturday he took his fences in great style. The halfbrother to Venite is a first-class stayer, and has improved with each race he has had. Dunedin Meeting For the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on Thursday and Saturday, arrangements have been made for a special train to leave Dunedin for Invercargill at 6.40 p.m. on Saturday. This train will stop at Wingatui to load horses returning to Southland and will also stop at Milton, Balclutha, Clinton, Gore, Mataura and Edendale and also, if required, at Waipahi and Woodlands. Surprising Support There was surprising support for the imported mare Cross Rose in her one appearance at Winton, but not at any stage of the running did she look like playing a part in the finish. In her previous start at Gore she had run a moderate fourth and it was surprising to see so much confidence shown in her at Winton. She is inclined to race greenly and may take some time before she is seen in winning vein. Novice Winner Colonel Rouge, who was improved by his race the first day at Winton, won in solid style on Saturday. He is a good type of four-year-old by Colonel Cygnus, whose stock are coming into their own this season. Moulin Rouge, the dam of Colonel Rouge, has produced others in Latin Quarter, Louise, Lorette (the dam of Colonel French), Parysiz, Frenchy and French Raid. Moulin Rouge was got by Kilbroney from Directoire, who left Frenchman, Francaise, The Parisian, Apache, Paris, Taroma and Dark Marie. Night Pal Improves

Night Pal, who beat the hack sprinters at Winton on Saturday, is one of the best bred young gallopers in the country. He was got by Nightmarch, a New Zealand Cup and Melbourne Cup winner from Palantua, also a New Zealand Cup winner. Palantua was got by Paladin from a great race mare in Mantua, who is also the dam of Valantua, winner of the Soldier Members’ Memorial Handicap at Winton on Saturday. This family has a great winning record and later on Night Pal may prove a worthy member of it, as it would not surprise to see him develop good staying form. The Wairio Club

At a meeting of the committee of the Wairio Jockey Club it was reported that the club’s recent fixture had resulted in a loss of £l5O. The committee voted the sum of £2/2/- to the St. John Ambulance. It was decided that the club combine with the Wairio Trotting Club and entertain Mr F. Boyle, who is leaving the district, at a social evening on March 1. Mr Boyle, who is a past president of the Wairio Jockey Club, has been a member of the executive for 22 years, and has been a member of the Trotting Club since its inception.

Blissful Lady A feature of the racing at Winton was the decisive win of Blissful Lady over a mile, this being her fourth success this season, and her third win on end. The Paper Money three-year-old has always shown herself to be a useful galloper and last season finished second to Gold Salute in a two-year-old race at Wingatui. She has not been hurried this term but the manner in which she outclassed the hack milers at Winton suggests that she will not be troubled to win over further ground. She is not a

big filly but is solidly made, and can handle both good and bad conditions. Although she is not engaged at Wingatui there will be good opportunities to place her to advantage during the next few weeks, and a race such as the Southern Champion Hack Handicap at Riverton at Easter, would suit her admirably. Her dam, Lady Blissful, has produced ohers in Baby Bliss, Overlooked, Johnny and Delvane. Lady Blissful was got by Elysian from the imported mare Lady Wayward 11, by Ladas from Vane, by Orme from Vampire, by Galopin. Lady Wayward II has produced Emperador, Conceit, Camulua, Ribble, Severn, Prodigal, Lady Blissful, Lady Sentinel, Lady Forward and Miss Wayward.
