GAS AS A LETHAL WEAPON SERGEANT-MAJOR SUTTON’S ADDRESS Something different in the way of talks was given to the Southland Travel Club yesterday afternoon when Sergeant-Major Sutton chose as his subject “Gas as we know it as a lethal weapon.” Mr A. W. Jones presided and commented on the increasing popularity of the club, the membership having now reached 150. Visitors present were Mrs Carterer (Balclutha), Miss Ringland (Dunedin), Miss Heslop (Christchurch), and Mrs Pigou (Invercargill). Mr Jones also welcomed Miss Burt who, he said, had done splendid work during the last war. He then introduced the speaker for the afternoon. “We in New Zealand,” said SergeantMajor Sutton, “are not sufficiently advanced in our knowledge of the various gases to be really afraid of them. The task is to learn more about them so that in the event of any emergency we are able to help each other.” The people in England, where danger was more immediate, were quite conversant with what should be done in the event of attack. Sergeant-Major Sutton compared the gas masks of today with those of the last war. In addition the soldiers were now provided with a bleaching paste to prevent blistering of the skin after it had come in contact with mustard gas. The speaker was of the opinion that it was necessary to have some organization that would know exactly what should be done in the event of the in-habitants-of a town being gassed. There were many such organizations in England; some assisted in decontaminating the roads and others assisted fire brigades in fighting that result from air raids. “I feel,” said Sergeant-Major Sutton, in conclusion, “that there is scope for such an organization in this town. Nobody knows what to do in the event of danger of this kind and now is the time to get familiar with the various gases and know the different treatments that should be given to prevent undue suffering.” Mr Jones and Mr J. Robertson thanked Sergeant-Major Sutton for his address. Mrs H. H. Murphy sang two songs that were very much enjoyed and the afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem.
