SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS

DECEMBER FIGURES SHOW INCREASE ADVANCE ALSO MADE IN REVENUE Except those under hospital benefit provisions, all the principal types of payment made under the Social Security Fund for December showed increases over those for the previous month, according to the latest issue of the Abstract of Statistics. The latest return of receipts shown is for November, when the amount collected was £961,524, compared with £496,479 for the previous month. The increase was mainly due to the quarterly collection of the social security charge of 5/-. For the eight months ended November 30, the total collection was £6,709,724. In November, revenue was made up as follows:—Registration fees, £83,746; charge on salaries and wages,. £486,000; charge on company income,' £89,531; charge on other income, £299,453; penalties £1698; miscellaneous, £1096. The main headings showing payments in December for Social Security benefits were:—Age, £584,020; invalidity, £84,963; hospital, £81,100; widows’, £71,505; mental hospital, £41,500; maternity, £29,930; family, £27,732. Unemployment benefits rose in number from 4924 in November to 5042 and payments showed a corresponding increase from £31,228 to £34,559. Sickness benefits numbered 2852 against 2764 and the payments went from £20,775 for four weeks to £26,618 for five weeks.
