END OF SCHÒOL YEAR

MORE FACILITIES AT GORE NEW ROOMS FOR USE NEXT TERM SPORTS HELD DURING AFTERNOON The annual break-up ceremony of the Gore Public School was held yesterday afternoon, at the school when a big number of parents and friends attended. The chairman of the' school committee (Mr H. C. Mac Gibbon) presided and associated with him was Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P. Mr Mac Gibbon extended a welcome to all present. For some years, said Mr Mac Gibbon, the committee had been concerned with overcrowding at the school. Two additional rooms were nearing completion and by the time the school resumed after the holidays they should be ready for use. The school was indebted to the Education Department and the Southland Education Board for their assistance. Concern had also been felt at the lack of playing areas, said Mr Mac Gibbon, but it was hoped in the near future to level the available ground at the rear of the school, where it was proposed to lay down tennis courts. Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., presented the dux medal to Nancy Wilson and the Grenfell Memorial Prize to Douglas Callander and congratulated them on their success. The sports championship cups were also presented by Mr Macdonald to William Trusler and Cynffiia Peirson, winners of the boys’ and girls’ championships respectively. The sports certificates and class certificates were presented by Mr H. R. Robertson, secretary of the school committee. SCHOOL SPORTS The Gore school’s annual sports meeting was held on the domain opposite the school in beautifully fine weather. There was a good attendance of parents at the meeting, and the events were followed with considerable interest. In the boys’ championship events there was strong competition between W. Trusler (the winner), R. Ferguson, R. Roy, E. Gentle and N. Harrison, there not being a double winner in the four events. Harrison won the 100 yards and Ferguson the 440 yards, while Roy won the high jump and finished third in the 440 yards. Trusler won the championship by winning the long jump, finishing second in the 440 yards, third in the 100 yards and third in the high jump. The girls’ championship was won by Cynthia Peirson, who finished first in the 50 yards and 75 yards and second to Joan Ferguson in the long jump. Results were:
