KATENE’S GOOD WORK

NELSON EDDY AS A STAYER FRANCISCO A HOLIDAY PROSPECT Acceptances for the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting close tomorrow night at 7 o’clock. Dunedin Cup The Dunedin Cup at the summer meeting of the Forbury Park Trotting Club will carry a stake of £750 and a gold cup. It will be a 4.26 two-mile. Related to Embark Cathay, who is engaged at coming meetings, is a half-sister by Wrack to Embark, a useful winner a few seasons back and who is still being persevered with. Smart Youngster Mr J. F. Hamilton, of Winton, has a very fine type of two-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Azaleas, the dam of Picotee, Tritoma, Gentleman Jim and others. He was a recent winner in the show ring. Named The three-year-old by Worthy Bond from Sunny Southland engaged in the Winton Juvenile Stakes has been named Sir Dighton. He is a member of A. J. Scott’s team at Gore. Has Improved Katene. has been doing good work at Winton and he looks a much better horse than when he was produced in the Invercargill Cup, in which he finished second to Dusky Sound. On that occasion he was carrying plenty of condition but he looks much more solid now. In the Gore Cup he will

be drivea by W. Cosgrove, 1 but in the Winton Cup Cosgrove has two of his own candidates in Aspirant and Voloma engaged. Holiday Prospect so Foremost Junior has come through a very sound preparation and he is expected to make a name for himself during the holidays. He looks a better horse now than at any other stage of his career. No Free-for-All The suggestion to include a free-for-all event on the programme of the summer meeting of the Forbury Park Trotting Club has been considered by the committee but “it could not be favourably considered for this year’s meeting.” Voloma Voloma has not raced for more than 12 months and she was very big in condition when put into work in October. The Adioo Guy mare has done well, however, although she may require a race to bring her to her best. The Winton Cup field is not a particularly strong one and as she is a grand stayer and a brilliant beginner these factors will assist her. Francisco The Jack Potts mare Francisco should be worthy of note for future events. She lost about a hundred yards at the start of the President’s Handicap and then finished third in 4min 27sec from a 4.34 mark. A Stayer Nelson Eddy, who won the principal event at the Timaru meeting on Saturday, is one of the most capable young pacers in commission and he has only to carry on to win his way to New Zealand Cup company. As a three-year-old the Nelson Derby gelding was claimed the best of his age and he has confirmed this opinion by showing brilliant form as a sprinter and stamina over longer journeys. He will secure plenty of opportunities during the holiday meetings at Ashburton and Addington. A Good Producer A recent winner at the New South Wales Trotting Club’s meeting is Ayress, by Globe Derby from the New Zealandbred mare Ayr. Ayress is a full-sister to Our Globe and Springfield Globe. Ayr was got by Logan Pointer from Precision, by St. Swithin—Kildasa, by Kilcheran—ldas, by Seaton Delaval— Ida. Ayr produced Cloudy Range in New Zealand. She carries a strong infusion of successful thoroughbred blood, as Idas won the Great Northern Foal Stakes, A.R.C. Welcome Stakes and Avondale Cup.

Dark Hazard’s Success When Dark Hazard won at Timaru on Saturday this was his first success for more than 12 months and it was not surprising that he was permitted to return a double-figure dividend. It was only his fourth start as a straight-out trotter, but in winning over a mile and five furlongs in 3min 46sec he gave an exceptionally good performance. The Great Bingen gelding has done most of his racing as a pacer, at which gait he took a mile and a-half record of 3min 15sec last season. A couple of seasons back he was raced twice as a square trotter at Hutt Park, finishing third in one race, but was later distanced for breaking in the straight, while in his second start at the same meeting he went off the mark pacing and was pulled up. At the New Brighton meeting recently he again started as a trotter, but went off pacing and took no part in the race. His performance on Saturday suggests that he is now much more solid and as there will be chances to place him to advantage dur-

ing the holidays he may not be long in repeating Saturday’s winning effort. First Payment After the first payment the following two-year-olds remain in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes, £4OO, to be run at the Auckland Trotting Club’s February meeting: Pearboro, b c Quite Sure —Regina Logan, b f Loch Moigh— Tui Wildwood, b g Jewel Pointer—Ada Vale, b c Surprise Journey—Luvan, Peter’s Find, b f Jack Potts—Free Advice, b g Jewel Pointer—Mountain Dell, Kenilworth, br f Nelson Parrish—Cogent, ch f Jack Potts—Blue Mountain King mare, Earl’s Pride, b g Jack Potts —Kewpie’s Guy, b g Jewel Pointer— Trustworthy, br f Red Shadow—Muricata mare, Play Ring, b g Jewel Pointer —Our Thorpe mare, ch f Nelson Parrish —Blue Mountain King mare, blk g U Scott —Escapade, ch g Jack Potts— The Abbess, b f Jewel Pointer—Bonnie Bingen, b f Toana—Cyone, My Lady Luck, and Diamond Jim.
