Southland Tennis Championships DRAW ANNOUNCED Very poor entries have been received for the championship and handicap tennis tournament to be held at the Waihopai Club's courts on December 25, 26 and 27.' The management committee of the Southland Lawn Tennis Association had a long discussion on the advisability of proceeding with the tournament. Voting on the question was even, and the chairman’s casting vote was given in favour of holding the tournament as usual. TITLE WON BY CAMBRIDGE RIDER HAMILTON, December 18. In the New Zealand hill-climbing championship at Tauwhare on Sunday the championship event resulted:—

Gordon Bell (Cambridge) 1, A. Harp (Hamilton) 2, J. Waters (Hamilton) 3. Bell’s time, 17 l-ssec, equalled the record set up by H. Maxwell (Auckland) 11 years ago. Later Harp clocked 16 4-5 sec—a new record for the hill, which is always used for New Zealand championships.

MINISTER’S WARNING APPRECIATED

WRESTLERS STRANDED IN NEW ZEALAND WELLINGTON, December 18. The warning by.the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) on the necessity for professional wrestlers visiting New Zealand under contract to independent promoters insisting upon return fares being paid, was described as very timely by a visiting wrestler, Frank Atkins,. in an interview today. Atkins said that with three colleagues, George O’Brien, Batros Pasha and McGinty Ding, he arrived in New Zealand in October They had approximately eight matches each. “We wish to express appreciation of the Minister’s warning and thank the Dominion Wrestling Union for paying our fares back to Australia,” Atkins said. They had been brought over by another organization which had not accepted responsibility for their return fares.
