BRITON TAKEN PRISONER
Member Of Moscow Embassy Staff ESTONIAN SHIP INTERCEPTED (United Press Assn.—Tfelegraph Copyright) (Received December 19, 1.30 a.m.) PARIS, December 18. Mr George Vereker, Counsellor at the British Embassy in Moscow, has been taken a prisoner by Germany while en route to England before taking up a new appointment in Bolivia. Mr Vereker went to Riga from Moscow 10 days ago and embarked on an Estonian ship for Stockholm. A German cruiser intercepted and took the ship to Swinemunde, on the north-east coast of Germany, where Mr Vereker was taken off. The official News Agency reveals that the Gestapo checked Mr Vereker’s journey at all points, accounting for the unexpected interception in a part of the Baltic now regarded as the Russian Fleet’s domain.
